Controlled Progression Index 

Using full-match passing matrices from 88 FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, we built a network-based view of each team’s possession structure. The aim was not just to ask who had more of the ball, but whether that possession was actually helping a team progress and create. 

Each dot in the chart represents one team in one match. The horizontal axis shows the Controlled Progression Index differential: whether a team’s possession structure was better or worse than its opponent’s. The vertical axis shows the same comparison for xG.

The pattern is clear: teams that out-structured their opponents in possession generally also out-created them.

Controlled Progression Index vs xG differential across 176 team-matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Teams that built better possession structures than their opponents generally created more danger too.

For us, good possession does three things at once. First, it stays alive. The ball keeps moving, players remain connected, and there is usually a safe option nearby. Second, it travels forward. Possession is not just recycled sideways; it gains territory and helps the team access higher areas of the pitch. Third, it is shared. The attack does not depend on one or a very few obvious players or one narrow channel that the opponent can easily close down.  

Interestingly, when we looked at these three elements separately, keeping the ball mattered less than expected. At this level, most teams can retain possession. What separates them is whether that possession moves forward and remains shared across the team. 

In other words, it is not just about keeping the ball. It is about what a team does with it. That matters because a team can look comfortable in possession but still be fragile if every attack depends on the same player. Controlled possession is not only about security. It is about balance, progression and collective support. 


What the World Cup data shows 

The Round-of-16 teams tell the story well. France, Portugal, Spain, Argentina, England, Belgium and Brazil all appear in the upper-right area of the chart: positive controlled progression differential and positive xG differential.  

This was not a marginal edge either. On average, the sides that advanced out-structured the opponents they faced by a clear margin, and this held even though they were not necessarily the teams simply passing the ball around the most. Progression, not accumulation, was the common thread. 

In football terms, they were not just completing passes. They were creating better possession structures than the opponents they faced. 


Why network analysis matters 

Traditional statistics can tell us how much of the ball a team had, how many passes it completed, or how many shots it took. Those numbers matter, but they do not always explain the shape behind the performance. 

Network analysis asks a different question: Did the possession have a structure that made chance creation more likely? 

That is the bridge between style and performance. 

Possession becomes more valuable when it is connected, progressive and difficult to reduce to one obvious hub. It is not just about having the ball. It is about how the ball moves, who it connects, and whether the structure helps the team create.
